Mikhail Tal takes his opponent into a deep dark forest

In 1957, Mikhail Tal played a training game that sparkled of tactics against his trainer, Alexander Koblents. The Magician from Riga met Koblents's Sicilian Defense with the Richter-Rauzer Attack. In a game of opposite sides castling, initiative is king and Tal understood this game element likely better than anyone else. It's impressive to observe so many of Tal's pieces in jeopardy, yet they cannot all be taken in just one move of course, or even be safely captured without negative consequence. One of Tal's most famous chess quotes is "You must take your opponent into a deep, dark forest where...

Bobby Fischer wins with the Fischer-Sozin Attack in 17 moves

Bobby Fischer produced a chess miniature against Peter Dely in 1967. In reply to black's Sicilian Classical variation, Fischer employed the Fischer-Sozin Attack. This game's key element is time. Black wastes it, and Fischer quickly pounces, executing the main idea of the Fischer-Sozin Attack and forcing black's resignation after only 17 moves. PGN: 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. The is the 2nd of a 2-game exhibition match played at the Manhattan Chess Club New York, 1957 between 14-year-old talent Bobby Fischer, and Max Euwe, the 5th World Chess Champion. This game went unpublished for over 50 years until Frank Brady unearthed Fischer's score sheet of it. Unlike the first game between Euwe and Fischer, this one was a closely contested fight which reached the final phase. Fischer had white, opening with the Ruy Lopez, and in reply Euwe selected an open system. Despite this open choice by Euwe, the game proceeded positionally, where imbalances in material and minor...

Garry Kasparov "sacrifices" both bishops

Garry Kasparov and Lajos Portisch produced one of the greatest games of chess from their round 4 encounter at the Niksic Tournament in 1983. This is one of the best chess games in large part for its combination of a double bishop sacrifice, and king walk. Garry Kasparov is, for a very large number of chess enthusiasts, the best chess player of all time. Only about 2 years after the featured game, Kasparov would become the best chess player in the world, winning the World Chess Championship title in 1985. Kasparov would remain among the best chess players in the...

AlphaZero's Dark-Square Domination

The idea behind an initial deployment of the queen's bishop to a6 in the Queen's Indian Defense is disrupt white's queenside in some way since the pressure on c4 must be addressed. AlphaZero, playing white against Stockfish 8 in this game, opts for a natural developing move to defend c4. This decision doesn't create any weaknesses, nor uncoordinate the white queenside minor pieces. Moreover AlphaZero follows up with a gambit which, to a certain extent, cuts the board in half. This gambit grants white access to the key square f5. This point is made good use of by the white...

Bobby Fischer blasts Reuben Fine in 17 moves with the Evan's Gambit | 1963

This game from New York, 1963 between Bobby Fischer and Reuben Fine was held in a skittles room. Though the game was played casually, it does not detract from what was ultimately produced in only 17 moves with the Evan's Gambit. Not only did Fischer quickly pounce on Fine's greed in the opening, but also opened an important floodgate in the middle game so all his pieces could help pursue an attack against the black king.
