Over the millennia, the age of the cycad came to an end. And in the case of Encephalartos Woodii, we may have been left with only one—a single male specimen. This tree is the loneliest bachelor on Earth. SUBSCRIBE:...

The Wasabi You Eat Probably Isn’t Wasabi

Most of the time, the wasabi you get in a restaurant or buy in a store is fake. It’s actually horseradish that’s colored green. Why? Well, wasabi is a notoriously difficult plant to grow. In fact, it’s considered the most difficult plant in the world to farm commercially. Yet for the past century, the Daio Wasabi Farm in Hokata, Japan, has been growing it successfully with natural spring water from nearby mountains. Eating (and Breathing) Dragon’s Beard in Singapore

For years, dragon’s beard candy—aka, the cotton candy of the East—was not readily available in Singapore. That is, until Auntie Lili came onto the scene. In 1988, she brought the sweet treat over to Singapore, using a centuries-old technique that requires pulling and molding a lump of malt into thousands of strings that resemble the beard of a dragon. Today, her cousin Roger Poon is carrying on the family legacy—with a twist. His creations let you breath out a plume of smoke, just like a “real” dragon. This Great Big Story was inspired by Genesis. The World’s Rarest Pasta Is Made Entirely by Hand

For more than 300 years, the world’s rarest pasta recipe and its intricate shaping technique have been passed down by generations of women in one Sardinian family. Today there are only a few women on the planet, including Paola Abraini, who know how to make “su filindeu.” The thread-like pasta is made exclusively by hand, requiring equal parts patience and craft to pull and fold the semolina dough into impossibly small, precise strands. Making the pasta is so tricky—and guarded— that for the past 200 years, the dish has only been served in a small town in Sardinia. This story was...

Keeping the Japanese Art of Candy Sculpting Alive

At 27 years old, Shinri Tezuka may be one of the youngest people still practicing the dwindling art of amezaiku, or candy crafting, in Japan. The self-taught Japanese artist carves, sculpts and paints delicate lollipops into intricate edible sculptures. Amezaiku dates back hundreds of years, but today there are only two artists left in Tokyo. Tezuka hopes his elaborate goldfish, frog and octopus designs will inspire the next generation of candy crafters to keep the tradition alive.
