Drones Sacrificed for Spectacular Volcano Video | National Geographic

Video technology and science converge on an active volcano in Vanuatu, where explorer Sam Cossman operated camera-mounted drones to capture high-definition images of the spectacular yet dangerous Marum Crater. Cossman and his team piloted the drones over the 7.5-mile-wide (12-kilometer) caldera while confronting toxic gases and boiling lava. Although two drones succumbed to the harsh environment, the team was able to bring back video and photos that will help scientists learn more about the volcano and the life around it. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. Hawaii Island Volcanoes

The island of Hawaii is built from five separate shield volcanoes that erupted somewhat sequentially, one overlapping the other. These volcanoes are: Kīlauea, Mauna Loa, Hualālai, Mauna Kea and Kohala. Kīlauea is a currently active shield volcano in the Hawaiian Islands, and the most active of the five volcanoes. It has been erupting nearly continuously since 1983 and has caused considerable property damage, including the destruction of the town of Kalapana in 1990. The 2018 lower Puna eruption, which began May 3, over several weeks opened two dozen lava vents downrift from the summit in Puna. The eruption was accompanied by...

Rivers of fast-moving lava flow from Hawaii's volcano

New, fast-moving lava poured from the flank of Hawaii's Kilauea volcano, destroying four more homes on the Big Island after a second explosive eruption shot a nearly 3.2km ash plume from the crater. Molten rock from two huge cracks formed a single channel and travelled 300 metres in under an hour, twice the speed of previous flows of older lava that have torn through homes, roads and tropical forest for over two weeks, the County of Hawaii's Civil Defense Agency said.
