Fountains of hot lava spew from fissures on the Big Island of Hawaii after the Kilauea volcano's massive eruption. Watch CNN's 24/7 live cam.
Hawaii's Kilauea volcano could soon send boulders and ash shooting out of its summit crater in the kind of explosive eruption last displayed nearly a century ago. CBC science commentator Bob McDonald explains why Kilauea has been continually erupting for centuries and how it compares to other volcanoes. »»» Subscribe to CBC News to watch more videos: http://bit.ly/1RreYWS Connect with CBC News Online: For breaking news, video, audio and in-depth coverage: http://bit.ly/1Z0m6iX Find CBC News on Facebook: http://bit.ly/1WjG36m Follow CBC News on Twitter: http://bit.ly/1sA5P9H For breaking news on Twitter: http://bit.ly/1WjDyks Follow CBC News on Instagram: http://bit.ly/1Z0iE7O Download the CBC News app for iOS: http://apple.co/25mpsUz Download the CBC News app...
Volcanic activity on the Big Island of Hawaii resumed this week, opening new vents as residents continue to evacuate.
Video technology and science converge on an active volcano in Vanuatu, where explorer Sam Cossman operated camera-mounted drones to capture high-definition images of the spectacular yet dangerous Marum Crater. Cossman and his team piloted the drones over the 7.5-mile-wide (12-kilometer) caldera while confronting toxic gases and boiling lava. Although two drones succumbed to the harsh environment, the team was able to bring back video and photos that will help scientists learn more about the volcano and the life around it. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. Hawaii Volcanic Eruption
Hawaii is bracing itself for a possibly explosive volcanic eruption. Since Saturday, two lava fissures have opened up on Hawaii's Big Island in the vicinity of a geothermal energy plant. Just hours after the first fissure opened up on Saturday morning, red and black lava had piled up about 40 feet high and more than 150 feet in length, while magma chunks sprayed up to 100 feet in the air, Reuters reported. Three new fissures have opened on Hawaii's Big Island, spewing lava and fueling fears of violent explosions more than a week after the Kilauea volcano erupted. Nearly 2,000 people have been evacuated since the volcano erupted May 3, sending lava flowing into communities and threatening a nearby geothermal plant.
With scientists closely watch Mount Kilauea for that possible steam eruption, we wanted to take a closer look at what would actually cause that to happen.
New lava fissures in Hawaii could force another 2,000 people to evacuate their homes on the Big Island. That's on top of the more than 1,700 people who've already left. There are 18 fissures near the Kilauea volcano. David Begnaud reports. Kilauea's newest eruption is devastating the Big Island with fiery lava flows and volcanic air pollution. Scientists warn that Hawaii's Kilauea volcano is on the verge of a new explosion that could send ash, steam and sulfur dioxide spewing from the summit crater and toss six-foot wide boulders as far as a half-mile away in all directions. "Primary hazards of concern should this activity occur are ballistic projectiles and ashfall," according to the Hawaiian Volcanic Observatory of the U.S. Geological Survey. The scientists, however, said they were uncertain exactly when the new eruption would occur, how long it would last or how violent...
