Video technology and science converge on an active volcano in Vanuatu, where explorer Sam Cossman operated camera-mounted drones to capture high-definition images of the spectacular yet dangerous Marum Crater. Cossman and his team piloted the drones over the 7.5-mile-wide (12-kilometer) caldera while confronting toxic gases and boiling lava. Although two drones succumbed to the harsh environment, the team was able to bring back video and photos that will help scientists learn more about the volcano and the life around it. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. Six million years ago, the Mediterranean Sea nearly dried up during what is called the "Messinian Salinity Crisis". This movie shows a physics-based computer simulation of the breach of Gibraltar and the flood of the basin. A similar event 10,000 years ago, in the then populated Black Sea basin, may have been the source of the Noah's Arc narrative. Researchers captured dramatic footage of a steady stream of lava pouring from the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii. The heat of the lava as it flowed into the sea triggered explosions, which threw debris back onto the top of the cliff. There have been some pretty amazing pictures from the island of Hawaii. A volcano there, named Kilauea, has been erupting and spewing out rivers of lava which have destroyed homes and cars. It's pretty scary stuff from a distance, so imagine what it's like for the people who live there. We caught up with some Hawaiian locals and found out more about their fiery mountain. Indonesia's most active volcano, Mount Merapi, erupted early Friday, spewing sand and pyroclastic material and sending an ash column as high as 5,500 metres (18,045 feet) into the sky. Military Update news :Hawaii volcano eruption: Mysterious freezing rain STUNS scientists after lava explosion I have never seen this before. This has sparked a winter weather warning for above 12,000 ft. There are ice on the roadways so this is creating dangerous conditions. This weather is yet another unusual byproduct of this lava flow that continues to emerge. According to the official advisory, recent observations from the summit of Mauna Kea, 72 miles from Kilauea, indicate below-freezing temperatures are bringing freezing fog and rain.
