How would a Swiss Army knife look if it were a tiny house

All of the furniture and rooms in Leonardo Di Chiara’s tiny house fold, swing and pivot into the walls so when closed the space is absent of color, like a whiteboard perfect for the creative process of a young architect. Calling it aVOID in reference to the hollow shell it can morph into, Di Chiara says it’s more aspirational than a reflection of his not-yet-hyper-minimalist lifestyle, He wanted an uncluttered lifestyle but he also wanted to be mobile and to live in a big city. His solution, to build a row house on wheels. Di Chiara has currently wedged his row...

Old silo now spaceship-esque tiny home in Berlin

After two years of living in a camper with his young daughter, architect Jan Körbes wanted something better suited to their active lifestyle, so he decided to realize a longtime dream of turning a grain silo into a microhome. With the help of his team at REFUNC, specialists in creative recycling, they bought an old grain bin from a farmer and set to work making it habitable. Working with a footprint of 4m2 (43 square feet), the group started by adding floors to the space. The final home is 3 stories and includes a climbing wall as sole means of reaching...

Paris micro-apartment stacks kitchen, bed, bath in 129 sq ft

When architect Julie Nabucet was asked to fit the rooms of a full-sized apartment in a 129-square-foot (12 m2) flat in the center of Paris (Montorgueil quarter), she stacked functions: she elevated the kitchen and rolled a bed-slash-sofa underneath (pulled out halfway, it's a couch; pulled out fully, it's a bed). To separate the cooking area from the sleeping/living room she used plywood boxes stacked as a wall. The boxes facing the kitchen are used as cabinets; those facing the bedroom are used as bookshelves. In the two-square-meter bathroom (21-square-feet), she squeezed an "Italian shower" (wet bath). There wasn't enough space...

Extreme transformer home in Hong Kong: Gary Chang's 24 rooms in 1

Gary Chang has lived in the same 32 square meters (344 square feet) for nearly his entire life. Nearly 40 years ago, he moved into the tiny apartment with not only his parents and 3 younger sisters, but they rented a room to a tenant. During his childhood the space was divided into several small rooms- kitchen, bathrooms and 3 bedrooms (Chang slept on the couch). In 1988 when his family moved out (into something bigger), Chang bought the place from the landlord for $45,000 and began his experiments in small space design. Today, at first glance, the small space appears a...

House in a suitcase: tiny home + 2 trunks of furniture

Original story here: http://faircompanies.com/videos/view/house-in-a-suitcase-tiny-home-2-trunks-furniture/ In 1996, Barcelona architects Eva Prats and Ricardo Flores were hired to convert an old community laundry into a penthouse. At just 27 square meters (290 square feet), the space was minimal; it was also just a temporary home and the clients wanted a home that was maintenance-free. Prats and Flores (in collaboration with the Mallorcan architectural firm Duch-Pizà) delivered their solution in the form of two suitcases. Their "Casa en una Maleta" (House in a Suitcase) consists of two big trunks in the center of the room which can be opened throughout the day to satisfy daily...

Tiny Origami apartment in Manhattan unfolds into 4 rooms

In 2005, third-grade-teacher Eric Schneider bought as big as an apartment as he could afford in Manhattan. He paid $235,000 for a 450-square-foot studio with a tiny kitchen. Then he let architects Michael Chen and Kari Anderson of Normal Projects design a way to pack more density into his small space. In order to fit more apartment in a small footprint, they created an object that's bigger than furniture, but smaller than architecture and that morphs with the changing activities of a day. It's a large, blue, oversized cabinet that houses all of the walls/bed/tables/shelving/closets needed for at least 4 full-sized rooms. By continuing...

Turning Montmartre flat into adaptive space perched on Paris

When tasked with adding space, functionality and light to a small-ish apartment on Montmartre- the tallest hill in Paris-, architect Alex Delaunay embraced the neighborhood’s stair culture (the local Metro has a 112-step spiral staircase, Montmartre’s Rue Foyatier has 300 steps) and created a multifunctional staircase wall to celebrate the “local climbing culture”. After opening up the apartment by removing all the non-structural partitions, Delaunay took advantage of the apartments’ longest space to create a multi-use structure housing a small office, closet and geometrical storage stairs leading up to the former-attic-turned bedroom. The furniture wall also has a window to allow...

Space saving furniture that transforms 1 room into 2 or 3

Resource Furniture sells bookshelves, couches and desks- and a combination of the above- that are so highly engineered that they gracefully transform into beds. Gone is the amusing awkwardness of Murphy Beds, this more modern transforming furniture (much of it designed and made in Italy y Clei) is high style and almost, well, magical. Hydraulics make the transition from bookshelf or couch to bed a smooth and effortless thing to marvel. Maison garage: old parking as tiny home in Bordeaux, France

Jérémie Buchholtz wanted an affordable apartment in Bordeaux (he's a photographer who splits his time between Paris and Bordeaux so his budget was limited), but he wasn't finding anything he liked. Then he stumbled upon a listing for a garage.  There was no house, it was just an abandoned garage for sale. And it looked like one. It had big metal doors that blocked out any sunlight and inside it was being used more as a junk room. So Buchholtz called his friend and architect Matthieu de Marien who specializes in converting stores, offices and other spaces into homes. De Marien took one look...

Cubic mentality: 4-story Paris flat fits comfort in 25 sq mt

Architect Jérôme Vinçon believes that with architecture, like clothing, made-to-measure buys a lot more than ready-to-wear. When his friends Michel Craca and Gaelle Potel bought a tiny apartment (next door to the restaurant in Paris’ Montparnasse where he’s head chef and she’s maitre d’) and asked for his help, he delivered a piece of personal architecture where every centimeter was scrutinized. In what was once a doorman’s room and cellar, Vinçon took advantage of the 17 feet of height and crafted four floors of personal architecture in just 25 square meters. Instead of creating the smallest staircase possible, Vinçon turned the...

Madrid accordion home: transforming walls get 5 rooms from 1

Yolanda Pila wanted to convert her grandparent’s forties-style tiny home on the outskirts of Madrid into something that would fit her more modern lifestyle, as well as an in-home design studio. At her invitation, PKMN architects redesigned the 50-square-meter (538 square feet) home using sliding shelving units to create rooms that expand and disappear depending on the time of day. The movable modules are common in warehouses and commercial spaces (they are suspended from the ceiling on rails), but here the architects appropriated them as flexible walls for the different rooms in Yolanda’s home. NYC "Swiss Army knife" apartment's walls open, fold & slide

Rosa and Robert Garneau's Chelsea apartment is small- just 550 square feet of usable space with a bedroom just 8 feet wide-, but they can both work from home, find privacy (even for meetings while the other is sleeping) and fit all their belongings (sports equipment and lots of office gear) thanks to walls that don't stand still. Nearly every "wall" in the Garneau's Transformer Loft opens to reveal cabinets, a bed or even a home office. And all of it was carefully designed for utility and precision. The hydraulics on their Murphy bed are so perfectly balanced that it opens...

Furniture meets robotics: superpower to show/hide what's used

Robotics-engineer-turned-entrepreneur Hasier Larrea wants to give furniture superpowers. In response to rising rents and populations in global cities, he has created a tool to make small spaces work harder with robotics. http://orisystems.com As head of Architectural Robotics research at the MIT Media Lab, Larrea spent 4 years developing strategies for “living large in a small space”: his team created an “army of furniture with superpowers” and built a 200 square-foot living laboratory focused on using mechatronics (electronics plus mechanical engineering). Now, his company Ori- Japanese for “to fold”- has created robotic furniture that transforms into a bedroom, living room or an office...

Small space living: my NYC studio apartment

I completely transformed my small NYC studio apartment into a functional, stylish & livable space, & then transformed it back to its original state: It was a wonderful place to call home for the past 3 years - no only was it the inspiration for "Engineer Your Space", it was also the source of many of the projects you've seen on the show. But it's now time for a change, and before I make the move to my new home in sunny California, I want to take you on a tour of my rental apartment. You'll see how I made small...

Rubik cube flat flips office, storage, dining & bedroom in SF

When Donnie Wang bought his 530-square-foot studio apartment in San Francisco’s Financial District, he was single. When his now wife, Nicole Chiu-Wang, moved in, he needed to stretch his bachelor pad to cover dinner parties, overnight guests, work from home (at times, for two) and his stylist wife’s large wardrobe. He called on his friend, designer Peter Suen, who pulled in his friend, designer Charles Irby, who began to design a kind of lean-to for grownups for his living room. They prefabbed a morphing wood and cement cube in Irby’s Oakland design studio ICOSA (he CNC’ed the formwork) outfitted with a...

Fully plumbed DIY treehouses & tree-cabin in OR "treesort"

When Phil moved to Oregon decades ago to be near his children, he began dreaming about building a treehouse or two. Once his children had grown, he indulged the fantasy, and with the help of friend and neighbor Michael Garnier (see our video of his Ewok village style treesort), he began to build up. Today, he and his wife Jody have three self-designed structures: the Japanese-inspired Shiitake, Tudor-style Calypso and the Cottage (a cabin in a tree). They rent them out by the night (they're fully plumbed) and the couple dreams of building yet another (Jody wants it to feature a...

Wyoming students make custom micro-campers to live & sell

As students from the University of Wyoming at Laramie, they wanted to experience the outdoors while avoiding big expenditures, so they decided to build their own micro-camper. When people started “offering them money for it” at gas stations, they decided to go into business. With Hansen Adventure Works, they built and sold 42 campers in the first 18 months thanks to extremely competitive pricing. The most popular models are the 5-by-8-foot, $3,000 Horsetooth and the $2,500 Armadillo, a 4-by-6-foot ultra-tiny home. They also build a $2,500 truck topper. While most models usually have a convertible couch bed, they can be...
