Inside the eye wall of Hurricane Michael as it made landfall in Panama City, Florida on October 10, 2018. Michael came ashore as a monster Category-5 storm, with sustained winds of 160mph and gusts over 175mph. The eye itself passed a few miles east of my location in Panama City, on Mexico Beach. The full force of the storm went on for an hour, maybe a bit more, as Michael snapped steel poles and forests in half, ripped many neighborhoods to pieces, blew over trains, RVs and semi-trailers, and left a path of destruction in its wake. Dr. Alan Blumberg of Stevens Institute of Technology has a big idea: if you kill the heat you'd zap the energy and eliminate or weaken the storm, thus fighting Mother Nature. Using a 360 camera attached to a specialized custom-built probe, Storm chaser Reed Timmer captured the inside of the wedge tornado that damaged south Elk City, Oklahoma on May 16, 2017. The probe was recording wind, pressure, and temperature data, even after the core flow knocked the unit over. The backside winds were likely howling at over 111 mph. The tornado itself begins to pass over near the 2:00 mark. This tornado was wrapped in rain and very difficult to see at times throughout its life-cycle.
