This is the World's Loneliest Tree

Tucked away in a corner of London's Royal Botanic Gardens, there is a very peculiar plant. At first glance, it resembles a stumpy palm tree, but this ancient specimen is incredibly rare. It is, in fact, the very last of its kind on Earth. Encephalartos woodii is a cycad, a type of plant that once dominated the planet during the Jurassic Period. Over the millennia, the age of the cycad came to an end. And in the case of Encephalartos Woodii, we may have been left with only one—a single male specimen. This tree is the loneliest bachelor on Earth. SUBSCRIBE:...

How the Inventor of the Rubik’s Cube Cracked His Own Code

Since the 1980s, the Rubik’s Cube has captivated the minds of puzzle solvers around the globe. But how did one of the world’s most addictive and prolific puzzles come to be? It all began in the beautiful city of Budapest, in the beautiful mind of Ernő Rubik, a design and architecture lecturer looking for a tactile way to teach his students about three-dimensional space. But the story’s real “twist” came when the creator had to engineer a solution to his self-made conundrum. Think you have what it takes to crack the code? Take it up with the master himself. A Portrait of the Puppet Master as a Young Man

Puppets—they’re child’s play, right? Spend five minutes watching Barnaby Dixon and you’ll surely disagree. At first, it might seem strange for a 26-year-old to be hand-building puppets in his bedroom and shooting videos of his performances for a living, but the puppet prodigy’s creations are completely original and totally addicting to watch. Barnaby started his career solely to make YouTube videos (https://www.youtube.com/user/barnabydixon), but recently hit it big after winning a 50,000 Euro grand prize on the German puppet talent show, "Die Puppenstars." Eating (and Breathing) Dragon’s Beard in Singapore

For years, dragon’s beard candy—aka, the cotton candy of the East—was not readily available in Singapore. That is, until Auntie Lili came onto the scene. In 1988, she brought the sweet treat over to Singapore, using a centuries-old technique that requires pulling and molding a lump of malt into thousands of strings that resemble the beard of a dragon. Today, her cousin Roger Poon is carrying on the family legacy—with a twist. His creations let you breath out a plume of smoke, just like a “real” dragon. This Great Big Story was inspired by Genesis. Perfecting Korea’s Old-Fashioned Fishing Technique

If fishing is supposed to be a tranquil, reflective hobby, then Jung-Hoon Park takes it to another level of chill. Instead of going after his catch with high-tech equipment or a state-of-the-art rod, Park goes at it old school. The South Korean hobbyist fisherman uses a gyeonji—a traditional Korean fishing pole that dates back at least 300 years—to chase river carp. With a tip that resembles a spinning triple-helix, the gyeonji allows the angler to more intimately feel his catch, even with bigger fish. While using one is no easy task, Park says the gyeonji has made him a better...
