The Magic of Making Sound | That's Amazing

In Hollywood, everything is magic and make-believe, even sounds. When you watch a film that immerses you completely in its world, you’re probably hearing the work of sound artists. If the work is done right, you won’t be able to tell that the “natural” sounds on screen are manufactured with studio props. That's the challenge for Warner Bros. Foley artists Alyson Moore, Chris Moriana and mixer Mary Jo Lang. Theirs is a practice in recreation, one creative element at a time. Tune in to "That's Amazing" every Sunday at 9 p.m. on The Weather Channel. SUBSCRIBE: https://goo.gl/vR6Acb Follow us behind the scenes...

The Lost Art of Playing Glass

Dean Shostak is one of last true masters capable of playing the glass armonica – an enchanting instrument lost to time. First devised in 1761 by Benjamin Franklin, the art of “playing glass” began to fade in popularity as musical fashions changed. Today, there are only eight glass armonica players left in the world. Along with the revival of the armonica, Shostak is also reintroducing an entire family of glass instruments, including the glass violin, the crystal hand bells and the French Cristal baschet. Horror Musical Instrument - The Apprehension Engine

Horror Musical Instrument - The Apprehension Engine *NEW* Check out new Apprehension Engine Performance video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QB2ee0M6nvo I made a sketch of an idea I had for an instrument that specialized in creating horrifying sounds, and I got my good friend Tony Duggan-Smith to build it for me, with the intention of using it in horror film score. It consists of metal rulers which are bowed, a hurdy gurdy like mechanism, a string played with an attached Ebow, a spring reverb (also played with an ebow) some long metal rods, magnets, trash, anything at all to get unnerving sounds. To use this video in a commercial...

Building Stop-Motion Masterpieces by Hand

Phil Tippett has spent a lifetime in the film industry, working as a model-maker, visual effects supervisor, director and stop-motion animator. He's been involved with big-name productions such as Star Wars, Jurassic Park, and RoboCop among others. But his real passion lies in handmade stop-motion animation. For over 30 years, Tippett has been working on an incredibly detailed film called "Mad God". He describes it as being set "in a Milton-esque world of monsters, mad scientists and war pigs." Amazingly, each character is painstakingly constructed by hand from foam, clay, latex and wire. Despite all the arduous toil, Tippett sees...
