Keith Brock, a resident of Hawaii's Leilani Estates, which has been engulfed by lava, returned home to collect his belongings only to find spewing, red hot lava outside his backyard. Three new fissures have opened on Hawaii's Big Island, spewing lava and fueling fears of violent explosions more than a week after the Kilauea volcano erupted. Nearly 2,000 people have been evacuated since the volcano erupted May 3, sending lava flowing into communities and threatening a nearby geothermal plant.

Hawaii Volcano Observatory reports a new 17th fissure has started to steam and spatter lava about 100 meters below fissure 16 at 6:00 p.m. There has been no lava flow from this new fissure.
