This Rags-To-Riches Business Has Beat The Retail Apocalypse (HBO)

Traffic on the corner of Melrose and Fuller regularly comes to a halt here on any given Saturday, as shoppers from near and far dart through traffic in designer sneakers. They’re trying to get from one Round Two store to the next. A few years ago, this corner was empty. Now it’s Round Two’s block, or “village,” as owner Sean Wotherspoon calls it, with its three stores clustered for a unique retail experience. In the Round Two vintage store, shoppers comb through vintage Polo jackets, Janet Jackson tour T-shirts, and other rare vintage finds, some with $200 pricetags. Next door, customers...

The World Leader in Counterfeiting: Lima's Fake Dollars

Peru is the number one producer of counterfeit US dollars in the world. In 2015, just over 16 million forged bills seized in the US were of Peruvian origin, according to the US Secret Service. Millions of counterfeit euros and Peruvian soles have also been seized by police in Peru. The forged dollars are finished by hand, giving them an exceptional quality which has earned the country its top spot as leader of this illicit global trade. And for the criminal gangs counterfeit money is cheaper to produce than cocaine. Fernando Lucena goes undercover for VICE News to expose the illegal...

The Vigilante Group Of New Yorkers Who Hunt Rats At Night (HBO)

Rats aren't only a part of New York City’s underground — they're an inseparable part of its pop culture. There’s Master Splinter from the Ninja Turtles, Pizza Rat, and even Cannibal Rat. But for every celebrity rat, there’s another 250,000 to 2 million anonymous rodents living in the city — and the city health department is fighting to bring down. The battle can be deadly. Last year, three people in a Bronx city block contracted leptospirosis through rat urine. Only two survived. To combat the problem, Mayor Bill de Blasio launched a $32 million initiative to rid New York of its...

The truth behind the TV show Cops

The longest-running reality show in The US. Join the Video Lab! http://bit.ly/video-lab Subscribe to the "Running From Cops" podcast: https://www.topic.com/runningfromcops “When it premiered, “Cops” was one of the first reality television shows and it has been broadcasting continuously since 1989. In this video, we worked with the podcast “Running From Cops” to understand why the show has stayed on TV for so long. At the time it was selected for development by Fox executive Stephen Chao, the writer’s strike of 1988 had created a desire for unscripted television that didn’t require hiring union talent. But once “Cops” was on the air, it was...

Counterfeiting Microsoft Windows Restore CDs Landed Me in Prison for a Year

In 2012, while living in China, longtime e-waste recycler Eric Lundgren manufactured 28,000 PC restore discs to be used in refurbished computers sold in the United States. The shipment of discs, exact copies of Dell-branded Microsoft Windows CDs, immediately raised suspicions with U.S. Customs officers, beginning a chain of events that would alter Lundgren’s life for the next seven years. VICE follows the prolific computer refurbisher as he's sentenced to—and released from—federal prison. The main obstacle for them, however, was that it didn't exist. I Broke Dumb Laws In Front Of Police

Britain is an old-fashioned, weird place, and its esoteric laws are among the most ridiculous things about the place. From it being illegal to handle a salmon suspiciously, to the threat of having your head chopped off for wearing a suit of armour in Parliament, VICE's Oobah Butler sees if anyone takes any of these laws seriously by trying to break as many as he can—in front of policemen. The South Korean Love Industry

With one of the lowest birth rates in the world, South Koreans are predicted to become extinct by 2750. Because of the rapidly ageing population this situation has created, elderly prostitutes known as "Bacchus ladies" have cornered a number of public parks as their working areas. Meanwhile, as the marriage rate falls and the country's younger generation continues to live at home well into their twenties, young people have been forced to book themselves into purpose-built sex motels to avoid the prying eyes of parents. We sent Matt Shea to investigate this generational crisis, which led him to Seoul's Red Light District,...

People Are Hiring Private Police Squads in Detroit (HBO)

In 2013, the city of Detroit filed for bankruptcy. As a result, budget and pay cuts have since pushed police officers toward better paying opportunities outside the city, and private security companies have rushed into the city. Now, private security is a booming industry in Detroit. The largest contractor has reported 25% year-over-year growth since the city’s bankruptcy. VICE News spoke to Dale Brown, an ex-army paratrooper, who began teaching his own brand of self defense in the early 90's and started his own Detroit-based security company called Threat Management Center in 2000. My First Spray Tan at One of Yelp’s Worst-Rated Tanning Salons | One Star Reviews

It’s been a long, long winter, and Taji is ready for the summer. To get a head start on his summer bod, he took to Yelp in search of the lowest rated tanning salon he could find, in order to transform his skin to the perfect shade of orange. So naturally, he went off to New Jersey to experience the services of a salon that’s tanned iconic celebrities including the cast members of “The Jersey Shore” and “The Real Housewives.” Unfortunately, Sizzle Tans has received a heap of one star reviews from people claiming to have experienced bad customer service...

The Worst Job In New York: Immigrant America

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News Milking cows is a dirty, monotonous job, and as we found out in our latest episode of Immigrant America, it's not a job many unemployed Americans are willing to do. But for some reason the government doesn't give dairy farms a way to recruit foreign workers legally, so most feel forced to hire illegal immigrants. This makes the farms and their workers easy targets for immigration authorities looking to fill deportation quotas. We went to upstate New York to try to understand the cat and mouse game going on between dairy farms and immigration authorities....

For most people, eating nothing but mac and cheese seems like a childhood fantasy. But for 20-year-old Austin Davis, who has been eating nothing but mac and cheese for the past 17 years, it’s not a fantasy -- it’s his reality and has become his affliction. For Austin, it’s about much more than just “liking” mac and cheese. Internet Scamming in Ghana

Fraudsters in Ghana show us how they use internet scams to steal thousands of dollars from unsuspecting victims all over the globe. -- While Nigeria's 401 scammers may have written the book on West African internet fraud, their shtick looks like Compuserve compared to what's going on in Ghana. Unsatisfied with the meager winnings from emailing thousands of random Westerners in hopes of convincing one poor sap they're the treasurer of the Ivory Coast, Ghana's scammers decided to stack the odds in their favor the old-fashioned way—witchcraft. Taking a page from cyberpunk, traditional West African Juju priests adapted their services to the needs...

China's Unmarried 'Leftover' Women

Since the socialist revolution, the rights of Chinese women have been written into the country's constitution. Under Mao, unprecedented numbers of women joined the workforce and they were celebrated as ""iron girls."" But now, China is home to a fifth of the world’s women whose status as equals is dwindling. Domestic violence rates in the country have soared, marital rape is not considered a crime, those who dare to call themselves feminist activists are being detained by the government, and unmarried women older than 27 are commonly referred to as ""leftover women."" To find out what lies behind the drastic shift...

Eating at the Worst-Rated Buffet I Could Find on Yelp | One Star Reviews

Taji and Coolr eat lunch together at least four times a week. But it’s always a challenge to find a place, due to Coolr’s very specific diet restrictions. Coolr is celiac, which means he has to have a dairy-free, gluten-free diet. He’s also allergic to shellfish. So naturally, Taji decided he’d be the perfect person to bring to one of Yelp’s worst-rated buffets, with hundreds of items on the menu. Things could go either way on this one. Coolr could leave satisfied, with a full stomach... or in an ambulance. Inside America's For-Profit Bail System

The US is the only first-world country that commercializes bail. The for-profit industry rakes in more than $2 billion annually in revenue. Most criminal defendants can't pay the full bail amount and must either stay in jail or pay a 10 percent fee to secure a bond, which they won't recoup even if found not guilty.
